THE GLOBAL POWER OF BRITISH KNOWLEDGE
British higher education is an economic and intellectual powerhouse. More than 2.86 million students study at UK higher education providers, while universities generate almost £54 billion in annual income. The sector’s wider economic impact has been estimated at more than £265 billion, with research suggesting every £1 of public investment generates £14 in economic benefit. Britain’s universities are also global magnets for talent, attracting hundreds of thousands of international students and carrying British knowledge, research and influence worldwide. From medicine and artificial intelligence to engineering, science and the creative industries, they turn ideas into innovation and research into economic growth. Our universities support jobs, strengthen regional economies and develop highly skilled talent. Few British sectors combine economic value, global influence, innovation and national prestige so powerfully. Higher education remains one of Britain’s greatest assets.
BUILDING BRITAIN'S WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE
British apprenticeships are building the skilled workforce of the future. In England alone, 353,500 apprenticeships were started in 2024–25, with 761,480 learners participating and 198,300 achievements recorded. Higher apprenticeship starts rose 15.1% to 140,730, while Level 6 and 7 starts increased 20.4% to 60,350. Across Britain, apprenticeships connect education directly with employment, allowing people to earn, learn and develop valuable skills while employers build the talent their industries need. From engineering, construction and advanced manufacturing to healthcare, finance and digital technology, apprentices contribute throughout the economy. Apprenticeships widen opportunity, support social mobility and address critical skills shortages. They are no longer simply an alternative route into employment; they are a powerful engine of productivity, professional development and economic growth, creating Britain’s technicians, specialists, professionals and future leaders.
THE ENGINE ROOM OF THE BRITISH ECONOMY
Britain’s further education and skills sector is the engine room of our workforce. In England alone, around 1.8 million adults participated in further education and skills in 2024–25, with almost 500,000 learners studying at Level 2 and more than 400,000 at Level 3. Across Britain, colleges, training providers and specialist institutions equip millions with the technical capabilities required by a changing economy. The sector supports young people entering work, adults retraining and employees upskilling as industries respond to technology and workforce shortages. From construction and engineering to healthcare, digital and green industries, skills education underpins productivity. With government targeting two-thirds of young people participating in higher-level learning by age 25 by 2040, Britain’s ability to develop, reskill and upskill its people will become one of our greatest economic advantages.
BRITAIN'S £40 BILLION GLOBAL EDUCATION AMBITION
British education is a multibillion-pound global success story. UK education-related exports and transnational education activity have grown into one of Britain’s most important international assets, carrying our universities, qualifications, schools and teaching expertise around the world. The Government’s 2026 International Education Strategy sets an ambition to grow education exports to £40 billion every year by 2030. British higher education programmes are delivered internationally, British schools operate across global markets and students travel from around the world to study here. This global reach creates revenue, supports jobs, strengthens international partnerships and extends Britain’s influence far beyond its borders. Few industries combine economic growth and soft power so effectively. British education does not simply educate the world; it builds relationships, develops future leaders and carries British knowledge, standards, innovation and influence into economies across the globe every day.
WHERE BRITAIN'S FUTURE BEGINS
British schools are the foundation of our nation’s future. Around 10 million pupils are educated in maintained schools across the United Kingdom, supported by more than 565,000 full-time equivalent teachers. Across four nations, British classrooms develop the knowledge, confidence and ambition that will power tomorrow’s economy. The scale is extraordinary: millions of young minds preparing to become our scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers, doctors, educators and leaders. British schools do far more than deliver qualifications; they build human capital, widen opportunity and strengthen communities. Behind every successful industry, growing business and breakthrough innovation are people whose potential was first identified, challenged and inspired through education. With around 10 million pupils learning today, Britain’s future workforce, economic competitiveness and next generation of leadership are already being shaped in classrooms across the country every single day.
